What is the difference between a 12 string and a 6 string guitar?

What makes a 12 string guitar different?
(here is a video link with a player switching back and forth, Way helpfull check it out!)

Most of the strings are tuned in Courses which are an octave apart, and the two final strings are tuned in unison. Most players today and in more popular typically tune their guitars in standard tuning, with the only difference being that they are tuned in pairs. When tuned like this you CAN play a 12 string guitar like you would a normal 6 string. Almost any song will work on a twelve string and it's mostly up to personal choice. However many players use open tunings or tune them down lower to reduce tension on the neck. And traditionally because of the newness of the guitar making industry, 12s were tuned as low as C to avoid warping, which is not as much of a problem today.

Sound-wise some people say that it sound brighter or has more of an orchestral sound. Or that it lends itself well to rhythm guitar. There is a bit more difficulty in picking a single string so it has not typically been used for lead guitar parts. As well as bending the strings in unison is seen as impossible.

However, this doesn't mean that the 12 string is only good for straight strumming. With practice you can fingerpick just about anything you can on a six string. There is a variety of styles and techniques. That's what this site is about. feel free to check it out!
